Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies

DescriptionVCET Graduate Fellowship
The Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies (VCET) is looking for a current graduate student to serve as the 2013/14 Senior Associate. This fellowship, funded by Vermont EPSCoR, gives a Vermont graduate student a deep look into the world of startup tech companies and venture financing — adding tremendous value to his or her graduate degree.
The fellowship is designed to fit within a graduate student’s busy schedule and is highly flexible — we expect the role to mold to fit the specific interests of each fellow.
The Senior Associate (SA) serves four primary roles:
1. Meet with entrepreneurs throughout Vermont
The SA will meet with hundreds of startup companies throughout VT, offering strategic consulting, sourcing team members and mentors as well as advising on capital options and path.
2. Assist portfolio companies with everyday needs and long term projects
The SA will assist Incubator and Seed Fund portfolio companies on short term and long term projects where needed. There is flexibility in this area to structure experiences to fit the specific interest of the candidate.
3. Facilitate deal flow and conduct due diligence for the VT Seed Capital Fund
The SA will often function as the first point of contact for incoming seed venture deals. He or she will meet with a wide range of entrepreneurs, analyze the opportunities presented and relay information to the investment committee and managers of the Vermont Seed Capital Fund. Furthermore, the SA will aid in the due diligence and deal structuring processes of potential investments.
4. Manage special projects
VCET takes on a variety of special projects each year. Past projects have included: setting up UVM Start (a crowdfunding platform connecting student entrepreneurs with alumni donors), teaching an entrepreneurship class to Middlebury College students, and organizing a statewide networking event for investors and entrepreneurs. The SA will be asked to aid in designing and directing future projects.
Applicants should have a strong interest in venture capital and startup technology, a thirst to learn quickly and broadly, excellent written and verbal communication, the ability to juggle a wide range of projects while meeting deadlines and a passion to carry out VCET’s mission of creating more high-quality technology jobs in Vermont. To qualify, the applicant must also be a graduate student in the state of Vermont.
