DescriptionINTERNSHIP IN BRIEF
This internship is an apprenticeship in Public Relations, as it is applied to Arts Management.
- learn to write English-language press releases and journalistic-style articles on arts topics
- master website/newsletter design using basic HTML and Dreamweaver
- assist in publicity photo shoots and ultimately take theatrical production photos
- observe and participate in arts marketing strategy meetings with clients of Jonathan Slaff and Associates
- compile and maintain press contact databases
- learn creative approaches to "the art of the pitch"
- apply new skills in website maintenance to the New York Theatre Wire (www.nytheatre-wire.com) and Curator's Choice (www.nymuseums.com), where the intern be trained in writing of news articles, headlines, "teasers," and digests of articles. This practical exercise is intended to raise the intern's English communication skills to a professional level. The intern have the opportunity to measure his/her own writing against the writing he/she is processing. This exercise will also give him/her first-hand experience in working for an actual NY media outlet, on the "other side of the desk," which is ideal training for media relations.
DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPANY:
Jonathan Slaff & Associates performs media relations for cultural institutions, domestic and foreign government agencies, professional theater and dance companies, fund raising events and civic events, primarily in New York City and its vicinity.
The firm solicits print and broadcast media outlets for news/feature story coverage, arts reviews and photo placement. It is one of the few press offices in New York that takes its own press photos. It is a leading theater press office in New York, which publicizes over 60 new works per year.
The company specializes in arts promotion for international events, and international staffing is part of our company culture. The company finds the throughput of international interns to be intellectually invigorating and embraces their creative contributions.
ResponsibilitiesHere is an example of a training plan. You will see it is designed for a 26-week internship. Please note: Since our work is interdisciplinary, the phases of training are combined in many cases.
The Trainee will gain a general understanding of the company, its mission and goals, business practices and tiquette, as well as its services and products. The Trainee will receive an orientation into the landscape of arts n New York, including its major institutions and funders, and the government agencies (City, State and Federal) involved in funding the arts. The nature and process of arts news will be examined in depth, as well as the journalistic and ethical issues involved in determining what is artistically newsworthy. The economic impact of the arts on neighborhoods and the city at large will be explained, in context of Jonathan Slaff's research as Chairman of DowntownNYC. Finally, artistic issues of drama and dance criticism will be examined in depth. (Weeks 1 to 3)
The Trainee will gain knowledge and practical experience in web software development tools and web design to learn how to effectively edit and maintain "NY Theatre Wire" and "Curator's Choice," two of the websites of Metro New Media, Inc. (Weeks 2 to 4)
The Trainee will gain skills and experience with press releases of arts events and will have the chance to improve skills in the relevant tasks associated with that including interviews, writing, etc. (Weeks 3 to 26)
The Trainee will gain an understanding of the various steps involved in an email marketing strategy/campaign and also gain practical experience in assisting in the execution of it through the use of Infacta Group Mail.

Trainee will acquire skills in theatrical and dance photography and apply them to campaigns for clients of Jonathan Slaff & Associates. (Weeks 3 to 26)
Trainee will acquire skills in TV production and apply them to Joe Franklin TV, Alien Comic TV, and other video productions of Metro New Media, Inc. (Weeks 3 to 26)
Two computer stations are dedicated for intern's office work. All software, media directories, and a reference library, including manuals of all kinds, will be at intern's disposal. A photo and video kit are dedicated to intern's photography and videography. An IT technician and tutor will be on call for Intern's assistance.
RequirementsRecommended for students on arts management or arts journalism career path. This is non-salaried but a great learning experience. Student in for-credit programs preferred.
The prerequisite is passion for the arts. We do not have any particular academic preparation requirement, but good written and spoken English is important, since most of our work is language-based.
