Wichita, Kansas, may appear to be a sleepy little town, but it has plenty to offer interns. It's affordable and named one of the most livable cities in the U.S. by CNN. While Wichita is thoroughly, and proudly, a cowboy town, it also has cool apartments, nightclubs, theaters, and museums.

Manufacturing is Wichita's largest industry, accounting for 20 percent of local employment. Wichita's economy is led by aircraft manufacturers Boeing, Learjet, Raytheon, and Cessna. The next largest industry is healthcare, including Via Christi Health System and Wesley Medical Center.

Some of Wichita's companies are highly respected in their fields. Vulcan Chemicals is a top producer of solvents used to make film, plastics, and soft drinks. Cargill is one the the country's largest agribusiness corporations, and Wichita serves as corporate headquarters for their meat division. The Coleman Company, a leader in outdoor recreational equipment, was formed in Wichita and is still headquartered there. Other major companies in Wichita include Chance Rides, top designer and manufacturer of amusement park rides, and Koch Industries, a leader in energy and finance.

If a smaller town with major employers is what you seek for an internship, Wichita might be what you're looking for.
