Listed first as the Forbes top city for job growth and the Milken Institute’s best-performing city, Austin is a metropolitan area meant to lure young professionals — or young professional wannabes. In just the past 4 years, more than 100,000 young people have moved to Texas’s capital city, and it’s population now approaches 2 million. Known as the Live Music Capital of the World, Austin continues to sing its Southern siren song.

The city’s nickname is no misnomer. Austin has two orchestras and takes pride in the fact that its music venues extend way beyond the original downtown entertainment district on Pecan Street, now 6th Street. Each night, clubs, bars and stages from the Warehouse and Market Districts to points south and east vibrate with more than 100 live performances. Austin boasts plenty of outdoor recreation, too, and ranks in the top 10 fittest cities. Lake Austin, Hamilton Pool Preserve and Krause Springs offer everything from waterfalls and grottoes to Red Bud Isle. With 350 acres, dog-friendly Ziller Park hosts numerous festivals. The park also has kayaking and access to Lady Bird Lake and Austin’s Botanical Garden, as well as the Barton Creek Greenbelt and its 190 miles of hiking and biking trails.

With nearly 50,000 students, the University of Texas — Austin ranked 53rd in 2015’s edition of Best Colleges and National Universities. The university has 17 colleges and offers more than 360 degrees that are as circumspect as the number implies. Information technology, however, is the buzzword here, with high-tech a caveat. Some of the foremost names in the game — Hewlett-Packard, eBay, Google, Samsung and Apple — maintain branches here. Major employers include Dell, IBM Corporation, the University of Texas, Advanced Micro Devices, Applied Materials, the Seton Family of Hospitals and St. David’s Healthcare Partnership.
