Cover Letter Example to Find Hidden Internship Opportunities

Chegg
Updated: September 9, 2020

You may have read recent studies finding that at least 70 percent of jobs are never posted or even made public. Rather, they’re filled internally or via networking. It stands to reason, then, that there’s also a hidden internship market—albeit a smaller one. So, how can you find those less-publicized internship opportunities? And how you can get an internship if it’s never posted?

In both these cases, it’s time to take matters into your own hands. Simply jot down all the companies where you’d love to intern and visit their websites to see if they have any openings. If they do, spend some time with Chegg Internships, and then hit “apply” on any appealing opportunities. If they don’t, it’s time to contact them to ask about the possibilities.

Your inquiry is basically your cover letter—so tailor it to the company and highlight the value you’ll bring to the organization.

Here’s a sample cover letter that seeks to create an internship opportunity:

Bella Jones
Hiring Manager
XYZ Inc.
200 Main St
Anywhere, CT 06095

Dear Ms. Bella Jones:

I’m committed to joining an organization that delivers high-impact consumer solutions, and I know that XYZ Inc. is a leader in the consumer products industry. I have been consistently impressed with XYZ Inc.’s innovative approach to the market, and I would love to be part of your team.

This summer, I am looking to gain industry experience as an intern. As an accounting major at ABC University, I have an exceptional academic record and solid work experience, having founded my school’s Women in Business club and worked as a part-time accountant with a local autobody shop, where I reduced costs by 15 percent. I look forward to supporting XYZ Inc. through my strong communication skills, knowledge of GAAP, and proficiency with Excel & PowerPoint.

While my enclosed resume outlines my background, there is much more to share. I look forward to speaking with you in-person and learning more about XYZ Inc. I can assure you that my drive, commitment, and enthusiasm will be of great value to your team.

Sincerely,

Kelsey Chen
