Zoo Atlanta’s Facility Department is responsible for building, habitats, grounds, pathways, landscapes and event spaces from a general cleanliness, maintenance, and upkeep perspective to ensure superior guest satisfaction and safety. The facilities department are broken down into three departments: Horticulture, Maintenance and Grounds Quality. 


PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This voluntary internship program provides qualified individuals with professional experience in the daily operations of the facilities department. The main role of an intern is to work directly with each department in facilities and see all aspects of what it entails to operate a zoo. 


RESPONSIBILIITES: Facilities interns are supervised by a staff member within either the Maintenance, Horticulture or Grounds Quality department or the Assistant Project Manager in Facilities. Assignments and opportunities that are available to a Facilities intern are based on individual progress during the internship. 


OBJECTIVES:

  • Spend time with each department to see daily operations 
  • Allow qualified individuals the opportunity to gain personal experience as a facilities intern at a world-class zoological facility 
  • Provide an opportunity to gain a strong understanding of potential careers in facilities management 
  • Work on MWBE database to acquire new contractors 
  • Walk zoo grounds and check for needed maintenance 
  • Assist facilities assistant project manager with current departmental projects 
  • Become familiar with work order system, Asset Essentials (Dude Solutions) 
  • Enhance productivity and efficiency of Facilities Department

Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age or older (undergraduate and recent college/vocational graduates are preferred) 

• Must be able to work 24-32 hours/week 

• Must be able to work approximately 8 hours per day on assigned days 

• Must provide proof of negative TB test and be willing to submit to a background check 


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to be on your feet for up to 4 hours at a time and lift up to 20 pounds. 


WORK ENVIRONMENT: Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Zoo Atlanta is open to the public 363 days out of the year, therefore, all positions at Zoo Atlanta may require employees and interns to work some weekends, holidays, and evenings.
