Division: Outreach York

Outreach York is a multi-purpose community resource center serving Villa Park residents. Programs include after-school and summer programs for children and youth in 1st – 8th grades, supportive wrap-around services for program families, and community organizing.


Program: Elementary After School Program

The after-school program for students in 1st-5th grades offers educational support, social and recreational activities, and field trips. During the school year, services are offered each day after school, and students are provided homework assistance, social-emotional learning, and recreation.


Responsibilities/Opportunities: The intern will work consistently alongside program staff in daily activities of the program. Responsibilities include providing homework assistance (small group and 1-1), developing relationships with program participants, assisting with the implementation of life skills and other extracurriculars (Art, STEM, etc), and attending staff meetings. The intern will receive exposure to various aspects of the after-school programming that support the academic and social-emotional learning of Elementary students. Some program activities may be modified or canceled due to COVID restrictions.

The intern will receive experience in the overall working of a Christian, community-based social service ministry and will gain knowledge of the assets and challenges of the diverse community served by YCRC. The intern will have the opportunity to utilize Spanish-speaking skills (if desired) in their interactions with bilingual students and will learn the supportive resources available to students and families.

Requirements

Requirements: BA/BS student in education, sociology, human services, or a related field. Previous experience with elementary students preferred. Willingness to drive for program supply purchasing purposes is preferred. Outreach seeks interns that demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of low-income and diverse populations and who also support OCM’s Statement of Mission & Faith.


Schedule/Hours: Monday-Friday; Between 8:00am–4:00pm, up to 5 days per week; Internship days (and to some extent hours) are flexible and can be negotiated to be consistent with program requirements.


Supervision: Individual supervision is provided weekly by program staff.
