National Family Policy and Politics Writer - Deseret News Internship -Winter/Spring 2023

The Deseret News National Voices In-Depth team is continuously looking for talented seasonal student interns or recent graduates to assist in reporting and writing stories. The intern will work with editors to help grow the publication's national brand and contribute principled, values-based ideas to the team. We are especially interested in interns who have a background or interest in covering family, faith and politics in various forms, including both short- and long-form journalism. We prefer interns who have previously published journalistic articles.

Interns will work with their supervisor to determine exact starting and ending dates, as well as weekly work schedules. If time off during the semester is needed, that must be coordinated in advance with the supervisor. This internship is scheduled for the Winter/Spring of 2023, and can start in January 2023.

Job expectations:      

• Develop and pitch story ideas
• Write and publish thoughtful and engaging articles.
• Be in regular communication with your editors and meet deadlines.  
• Engage on social media and help grow the Deseret News following. 
• Fact-check freelance articles, perspective pieces and features.   

Skills necessary:

• Advanced writing abilities.
• A strong but thoughtful voice.
• A healthy understanding of current events.
• Familiarity with AP style.
• The ability to look for different story angles, including those no one else is covering
• Ability to meet daily deadlines.
• Careful, detail-oriented approach to reporting.
• The ability to gather information and write fast when news breaks.

Pay

Deseret News internships pay $14.00 per hour.
