Human Resources Intern Human Resources Intern Summary Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) is one of the largest animal welfare organizations in the country, taking in more than 35,000 animals each year. We are different from other rescue organizations because we do not turn away any homeless, abandoned, injured or sick animal in need, including cats, dogs, rabbits, small mammals, reptiles, birds, farm animals and wildlife. ACC is the only 501(c) (3) nonprofit in NYC with this unique responsibility. The Human Resources Intern will learn all aspects of human resources by assisting the department with a variety of tasks including, but not limited to: recruitment, on boarding, orientation, and statutory compliance. The intern will have an opportunity to network with other departments, interface with all levels of personnel and will gain a better understanding of Human Resources, its role in a nonprofit setting and be better prepared to work in the nonprofit sector. Responsibilities Administrative (80%) Support the Human Resources Assistant during the on-boarding process by preparing new hire folders, assisting with I-9 compliance, running background checks, and other duties as assigned. Assist the department with moving physical employee files over to an electronic storage system through ADP Workforce Now. Prepare workers compensation reports, claims, and notify insurance of all employee injuries. Assist with maintaining OSHA Log and completing workers compensation forms as needed. Support staff with their claims and provide guidance as needed. Support the HR Assistant with organizing and maintaining HR documents including I9s, job applications, rejection letters, and workers compensation forms. Assist in creating and distributing employee name badges. Recruitment (15%) Assist with the recruitment process by maintaining job postings, sourcing resumes, and scheduling interviews, as needed. Attend and represent ACC at career fairs with the HR Assistant. Other (5%) Other duties as needed. Qualifications Must be detail-oriented, with excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) required. The successful candidate must have the ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and diplomacy at all times, possess a high level of professionalism, be customer service driven and flexible in attitude, and demonstrate an ability to proactively raise questions and take on responsibility. Must be forward thinking and anticipate challenges, responding to them quickly and completely; is a people person and a team player; has a passion for learning and is knowledgeable in current employment and engagement trends; is organized, detail oriented; is vocal and enjoys sharing ideas. Education and Work Experience Bachelors Degree in business administration, human resources, psychology or related field preferred. Proficient in Excel, MS Word; Outlook and PowerPoint. Work Environment ACC has five locations across the 5 boroughs and a corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan. This position is located in our headquarters and includes occasional visits to the other animal sheltering locations. The headquarters has an office cat and on occasion other animals. When visiting shelter locations, employee may be exposed to odors or airborne particles including animal fur and toxic chemicals, and high levels of noise. This is a part-time, temporary internship. 24 hours a week. Reports To: Human Resources Manager Overtime: This is a non-union position and is eligible for overtime.
