Interpretive Intern II Salary $16.00 - $22.00 Hourly Location County of San Mateo, CA Job Type Intern/Fellow Department Parks Department Job Number I053ax Closing Continuous Description San Mateo County Parks consists of 22 regional parks, historic sites, and regional trails. The properties have a wide variety of habitats, species, and visitor use. The Interpretive Program is an environmental education and outreach program that hosts a variety of events and activities throughout the year, including Take A Hike, Junior Ranger, Movie Nights, and more! The Interpretive Program also runs the Sign Shop which produces signs and other graphic materials for the department and other local agencies. The intern would report to Coyote Point Recreation Area, but will need to report to other park locations for a variety of events. NOTE : This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment. Examples Of Duties An Interpretive Intern would be responsible for: Assisting with and co-leading weekly visitor activities and promoting upcoming events. Organizing and co-leading visitor activities, including event set-up and clean-up. Assisting with work in the Sign Shop Assisting with sponsored hikes/talks and trail and habitat restoration work days. The ideal candidate will have the ability to learn new skills, the ability to follow directions, and a strong commitment to provide exemplary customer service to park visitors. This position requires driving to different park locations, using County Radios, some manual labor and handling power-driven tools and machines. This is a full-time position that will require the Naturalist Intern to work the following hours: Tuesday: 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Wednesday: 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Thursday: 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Friday: 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Saturday: 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Qualifications Current students, with at least one year of college level education in Environmental Science, Forestry, Biological Sciences, or related fields. Recent graduates are welcome to apply. Experience communicating with the public in a formal occupation. General knowledge of plants, animals, fungi in a Redwood Forest Habitat. Previous experience working with children preferred. Interest and enthusiasm for the environment. Previous Graphic Design experience preferred. CPR/First Aid certified (may be able to attend parks training). Must have a valid California Driver's License. Application/Examination *Please note that there are no housing facilities for interns.
