Maximum length 200 words.) : Explain how diversity has played a role in your career and how it has contributed to the professional you are today Based on your background and personal experiences, describe a situation where you fostered diversity Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity of UMass Medical School or an encounter that demonstrated the important of diversity to you Please discuss how your record of achievements has been enhanced by exposure to diverse people, places and experiences or publications GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: Introduction to Scientific Communication The RNA Therapeutics Institute faculty are recognized as scientific trailblazers, and include a Nobel Laureate, a Gairdner Prize recipient, the 2018 RNA Society early and mid-career award recipients, and two Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators. The student will be exposed to a department conducting world-renowned research, as well the opportunity to learn how to communicate science effectively to a variety of audiences in real-world contexts. The student will also learn how to communicate the need for basic science, and which modes of communication are best for a range of audiences. This is a 10-week internship and the pay is $15/hour. The position is expected to be full-time over those 10 weeks. Responsibilities MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: The student will gain experience in the following areas: Scientific Writing: Hone scientific writing skills by preparing material for the RTI in a variety of contexts Scientific Education: Help to create educational content for lay audiences to understand objectives of the RTI (i.e. what is RNA?) Digital scientific communication: Create content for the RTIs social media channels and website Scientific Marketing: Assist in scientific marketing of the RTIs inaugural international symposium, RNA Therapeutics: From Base Pairs to Bedsides. Support the scientific symposium planning, as well as exposure to how to manage a scientific event on-site. The student will have the opportunity to interact with research faculty and staff to gain knowledge and understanding of the research activities in the department. At the end of the internship: The student will prepare a presentation outlining a disease-related scientific story in which the RTI is conducting research on (why this disease, what is the RTI doing and why should the public care?) The student will create a document on how to tell an interesting story (scientifically), as well as how to calibrate for a specific audience. Individuals interested in scientific communication, or those who would like to explore this area, will find this internship valuable. Enthusiasm and attention to detail are necessary.
