Medical Coder Intern Barrow Brain & Spine - Phoenix, AZ3.8 3 hours agoPart-timeEstimated: $36,000 - $49,000 a year Apply Now Skills * Computer Skills * CPT Coding * ICD-10 * Microsoft Word * Medical Coding Certification BARROW BRAIN AND SPINE MEDICAL CODER INTERN JOB TITLE: Medical Coder Intern DEPARTMENT: Business Office REPORTS TO: Billing Supervisor FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt JOB SUMMARY: The Medical Coder Intern will learn the skills necessary to ensure that provider documentation meets regulations that govern recordkeeping. They are responsible in protecting patient privacy by keeping medical histories confidential. The coder reviews records to determine if the records contain the personal information and treatment details the law requires and assigns ICD-10 and CPT codes for appropriate reimbursement. The internship is part-time (25 hours per week) for duration not to exceed 6 months. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Prolonged sitting, standing, some bending, stooping and stretching and/or walking. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard, photocopier, fax machine, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Normal range of hearing and vision to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment, with contact with office staff, management, physicians, etc. Through the course of the internship the individual will learn and be responsible for: Reviews and, if necessary, corrects evaluation and management codes. Composes meaningful and grammatically correct medical necessity and coding appeals. Stays current with changes in reimbursement and coding regulations. Conducts periodic medical record audits to ensure documentation is consistent with billing. Attends staff meetings, training sessions and special seminars as required Maintains strictest confidentiality. Plays a lead role in ensuring BBS remains within federal and state regulatory compliance for coding. Maintains professional affiliations and enhances professional development to keep current in the latest health care trends and developments. Other duties and assignments as assigned. PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: Reports to work regularly without undue tardiness Maintains positive attitude and demonstrates the utmost in professionalism Dresses appropriately and professionally Completes work accurately and in a timely manner Prioritizes work activities and receives and assumes multiple job duties Maintains effective working relationships with physicians, administration, and BBS staff members EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Certified Professional Coder (required) Knowledge and training of ICD-10 Current on ICD-10 CEU's to maintain credentials. Strong analytical skills Completed anatomy and physiology course Appropriate computer skills; preferred Excel and Microsoft Word Strong communication skills and ability to explain coding logic
