The program offers interns professional experiences and training opportunities that are tailored to meet their educational and professional goals. The College Internship Program provides opportunities for interns: To acquire specific skills that are needed to pursue their professional goals and aspirations. To earn money (at agency discretion) while continuing their education. To train with people who manage the day-to-day business of State of Mississippi government. To combine academic study with the on-the-job experience. To learn how state agencies provide services to Mississippi and the nation as a whole. To obtain hands-on-work experience in their field of study. Student interns are able to work in state agencies for temporary and/or seasonal positions. Students work flexible work schedules, and are from all educational backgrounds. Eligibility Requirements : Verification from an accredited college or university showing proof of current enrollment as a full-time student. Verification from an accredited college or university showing proof of GPA as 2.0 or higher and completion of thirty (30) hours of coursework. Students also must meet any additional criteria their school requires for participation in our program. This may include G.P.A., grade level, and number of credit hours earned. International students: To be eligible for this program, you must be currently enrolled in a college/university in the United States and possess unrestricted U.S. work authorization. Typically, this means international students must be studying on a F-1 or J-1 visa. Contact your international student advisor if you have any questions regarding your eligibility. Reminder: Should an invitation be extended to you, you will be required to submit verification of your legal right to work in the United States at the time of your arrival. Program Competencies : Follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively with others in both oral and written form. Organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines. Work independently, exercising judgment and initiative. Maintain an effective working relationship with clients, employees, exhibitors, patrons, and others encountered in the course of the internship. Examples of Work The goal of this Human Resources internship is to offer the opportunity to students to participate and gain professional skills and experiences by applying knowledge acquired in the classroom to real world situations. This internship is a part-time, non-paid internship, equivalent to entry-level personnel work, performing duties which assist an administrative superior in carrying out a comprehensive personnel management program. Incumbents are responsible for personnel functions such as assisting with orientation training; applicant recruitment and selection procedures; conducting studies; maintenance of individual personnel records, and organization/position records; and preparation and submission of forms and data for personnel transactions. Wellness Benefits Employees are eligible for a wellness and health promotion program. This plan provides annual benefits for certain services with first-dollar coverage with no deductible. Life Insurance All eligible employees receive an actual term life insurance policy upon employment. The policy coverage is two times the employees annual salary to a maximum of $100,000. Flexible Spending Accounts Many state agencies provide opportunity for employees to participate in pre-tax spending accounts. These accounts allow employees to withhold childcare expenses and unreimbursed medical expenses prior to application of state and federal taxes. Paid Personal Leave and Sick Leave Full-time employees receive paid time off for personal needs and for sick leave. Leave begins accruing after one month of employment and may be used as it is accrued. Employees earn approximately 18 days of personal leave annually and 12 days of sick leave annually. Military Leave In accordance with federal law, all employees serving in the armed forces or the military reserves are entitled to 15 days per year for military training. Holidays Employees receive up to 10 paid holidays to enjoy many of our nations celebrations with family and friends.
