Job Details Title Hydroponic Greenhouse Intern Posting ID Intern_GB_4-23-2019 Description Greenbush - The Southeast Kansas Education Service Center is seeking applications for a Hydroponic Greenhouse Intern. Anticipated start date: June 3, 2019. Position will remain open until filled. Equal Opportunity Employer. INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS: The intern would be required to be present 3 days a week, and hours would vary depending on the tasks needing to be done on a particular day. On average, the intern will need to commit 1-2 hours per day, which would be 4-8 hours a week to the internship. This is a mentored internship, in which our Horticulture and Outdoor Education Coordinator will be training the intern as well as be available to answer any questions and assist when needed. The student will be expected to complete tasks with minimal supervision, and provide their own transportation. The internship runs from June 3rd through August 2nd As a career readiness agricultural opportunity, applicants between the ages of 16-18 are preferred. This is an unpaid internship, however, our organization furnishes all of the training and supplies required, as well as provides a unique career experience for any student that is considering following an agricultural pathway, or interested in fulfilling an SAE for FFA or a 4-H project. We request students come prepared with an outline of an individual project they would like to work on during the internship as well. This could be a written summary, a 4-H notebook, or documentation for an SAE with FFA. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Manages all job duties with mobility, agility, and dexterity. Ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations. Endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking distances, and daily exposure to the sun and heat DESCRIPTION: The Greenbush greenhouse has a hydroponic system that consists of the following components: 3 Tray Propagation table for seed starting, with a 700 plant capacity All of our seedlings start here in an oasis or rock wool cube Hydroponic Nutrient Film Technique System with a maximum capacity of 2000 plants We are currently growing 4 varieties of lettuce, strawberries, and culinary herbs (cilantro, parsley, basil, dill, chives) in the NFT system. 10 Hydroponic Bato/ Dutch Bucket System Currently we are growing tomatoes and cucumbers in this setup. Our campus also has 3 outdoor raised garden beds that interns are welcome to use for projects as well. Daily Tasks and Skills include but are not limited to: General Safety Food Safety Greenhouse Procedures Seeding Transferring Packaging Labeling Testing and adjusting water parameters Reservoir and pump maintenance Nutrient addition and replacement Horticultural Knowledge Water quality Pollination Basic pest, disease and fungal identification and treatment Documentation and Record Keeping Inventory Orders Inspection Logs Traceability Log/ Harvest records Pest Control Log TO APPLY We encourage school staff to share and nominate candidates that may be interested!
