Part-time, Temporary, Internship What Your Job Will Be Like We are seeking a Graduate Student Intern to work in the Sandia Pulsed Power Sciences Center as part of the Z Machine diagnostics team. This team develops and fields cutting edge diagnostic instrumentation to record and interpret x-ray and neutron data for high energy density physics experiments in the worlds largest experimental radiation source. Applications include inertial confinement fusion, materials properties in extreme environments, radiation effects, and astrophysical phenomena. This position primarily involves modeling of physical phenomena, particularly neutron transport, to develop new diagnostic approaches and understanding of diagnostic data. The position may also involve performing scientific experiments in the laboratory to develop neutron measurement capabilities. On any given day, you may be called on to: * Develop and/or use physics simulation codes to model diagnostic instrument measurements * Develop new approaches to data interpretation to increase measurement capabilities and scientific interpretation of data * Work with scientific and engineering teams to develop and implement new designs and modifications of diagnostic instruments * Use measurement equipment and software to collect, process and analyze experimental data in the laboratory Qualifications We Require You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements: * Earned bachelor's degree * Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program * Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 * Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer * U.S. citizenship Additional Requirements: * Bachelors Degree in an STEM discipline * Currently enrolled in a graduate program studying Nuclear, Plasma, or High Energy Density Physics or Engineering (or a closely related discipline) * Education and/or experience with physics modeling and simulation Qualifications We Desire * Education and/or experience with neutron transport modeling * Experience with neutron transport modeling codes (e.g. MCNP) * Experience performing scientific experiments including operation of scientific instrumentation, operation of electronic test equipment, and collecting, processing and analyzing scientific data * Excellent organizational and written/verbal communication skills About Our Team The Radiation and Fusion Diagnostics Department (1676) researches, develops and fields state-of-the-art diagnostic systems for measuring conditions created in high energy density z-pinch experiments on Sandias pulsed power Z Machine, the worlds largest experimental radiation source. The department is composed of a multidisciplinary team of research scientists and technologists that work together in a collaborative environment to develop and field temporal, spatial, and/or spectral resolving diagnostics with an emphasis on instruments that measure X-ray and Neutron emission. The departments activities include measuring neutron activation and time-of-flight for inferring neutron yield and ion temperature in fusion plasmas, X-ray fluence measurements to characterize X-ray outputs, and soft and warm X-ray imaging and spectroscopy to characterize source performance. The team develops and utilizes calibration and characterization capabilities in the laboratory and at partner facilities such as Sandia's Ion Beam Laboratory, the National Ignition Facility, the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource. The department also develops new diagnostic capabilities such as neutron imaging, fusion burn history, and high-resolution time-gated X-ray imaging.
