Critical Infrastructure Protection Apprentice/Lead B&B Electrical and Utility Contractors - Brandon, MS $14 - $28 an hour Summary/Objective The Substation Apprentice/Technician will perform the work associated with and including, but not limited to, the installation, testing and inspection of all equipment associated with the security of substation perimeters and control houses. Candidate should be detail oriented as well as able to work in many different atmospheres as needed. Candidate will work under the direct supervision of the crew foreman and alongside other crew members. Essential Functions To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. * Perform installation and testing of all installed equipment in the substation yard and the substation control house. * Assist with programming of all installed equipment. * Installation of different types of conduit inside control house as well as outside in the substation yard. * Install all required wiring and terminate connections as directed. * Read and interpret blue prints, wiring diagrams and conduit runs via said blue prints. * Perform work from different heights utilizing ladders and/or a manlift or scissor lift. Competencies Hands on experience installing and testing multiple types of substation equipment. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills. * Must be able to read and understand technical information, manuals, policies, procedures, work orders, blueprints, and diagrams. * Must be able to deal with emergency situations, hazardous conditions, multiple priorities, frequent interruptions, and time constraints. * Must possess leadership skills to provide guidance and training to assigned personnel in a safe effective and positive manner. Provide detailed paperwork and documentation to ensure accurate record keeping, billing and inventory. * Assist in other areas of the company and perform other duties as assigned. * Comply with all company safety rules and procedures. Be responsible for tools, test equipment and vehicles. * Develop advanced skills and the ability to work independently. * Assignments for entry level candidates are closely supervised and designed to further develop employee job knowledge and abilities. Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and animals/insects. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position must have the ability to lift heavy objects weighing at times up to 100 pounds and carry that weight a minimum of 20 feet on a regular, recurring basis. Must have the ability to walk over uneven, steep, or difficult terrain for distances of over one mile on a regular, recurring basis and stands for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. Must be able to carry 25 pounds of gear while working in an aerial lift device with a weight limit of 350 pounds. The employee must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination. The position requires the ability to climb up to and onto elevated equipment. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have excellent stamina. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position. Work day consists of 10 hour days but it is not uncommon to work longer hours depending on the work being performed. Candidate may be required to work overtime as needed. Travel Travel is common with this position. Although some work sites will be local, out of area work and overnight travel should be expected. Out of area work and overnight travel will be dictated by project scope and duration. Required Education and Experience * Substation Apprentice/Technician does not necessarily require prior experience in the substation field but experience is preferred. * Experience in the electrical field is preferred but not required. Additional Eligibility Qualifications * Ability to obtain TWIC card. * Ability to obtain CIP and/or Security Clearances as required by customer. * Ability to pass customers required testing qualifications (written & field) to gain access to and perform work in customer owned facilities.
