Intern 2 - Transportation and Traffic Division, Casual Salary $20.39 Hourly Location Sunnyvale, CA Job Type Casual Department Public Works Job Number 18-00313 Closing Continuous Description PART-TIME INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY INTERN 2 TRANSPORTATION AND TRAFFIC DIVISION Submittal of a current (issued within the last 30 days) California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Driving Record is required at time of application . You can obtain a copy of your driving record online at the DMV website at http://www.dmv.ca.gov . Note Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). A paid intern position is available with the Division of Transportation and Traffic. The position is an excellent part-time opportunity for a College Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student wishing to obtain work experience in the Transportation and Traffic Engineering field. This internship will involve both field and office work. Enrichment Opportunities Learn theory, timing, operation and maintenance of traffic signals, and their communication systems. Learn and work with the City's Traffic Management Systems, MaxTime, Cameleon and Velocity, and assist with field implementation with various ITS devices. Work on various traffic signal projects, including design, operations and construction inspection. Essential Job Functions Collects traffic data, traffic counts, and performs field observations. Analyzes the data collected and prepares reports summarizing the findings. Works effectively with City staff, consultants, administrators, other governmental agencies, and the general public; the candidate is expected to conduct him/herself in a highly professional manner at all times while representing the City. Conducts and processes Engineering and Traffic surveys (E&TS). Receives, investigates and responds to requests or complaints from the public regarding traffic controls; prepares reports and recommendations. Performs traffic control devices warrant studies, such as traffic signal and stop/yield sign warrants. Assists City staff with Transportation Planning and Land Development related assignments such as neighborhood traffic studies. Prepares and reviews various signing/striping plans, traffic signal and construction plans, and Temporary Traffic Control plans. Assists City staff with other duties as desired, including some administrative tasks as needed. Hours : Hours are flexible; a minimum of 20 hours per week is highly desired with a maximum of 25 hours per week. The selected candidate for this position will work under the supervision of a higher-level supervisor on weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. but some early morning, evening and weekend work may be required. WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, and turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine motor coordination when using a computer keyboard. Near vision is required when reading plans, written reports and other documents, and far vision is required when performing field work. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. The job duties may expose the employee to the outdoors, which may include exposure to fumes, dust, allergens, and air contaminants. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to work in construction zones and heavy traffic conditions. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation. Minimum Qualifications Education: College Junior, Senior or Graduate Student having completed at least one course in Traffic Engineering and/or Transportation Planning or related field. Positive work attitude, reliable and responsible. Ability to write and communicate concisely and effectively. Proficient computer skills with basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Access. Advanced computer skills may include (not required) ArcView GIS, AutoCAD and Synchro. Good organizational skills, detail-oriented and good data keeper. Interest in Traffic and Transportation Engineering and willingness to learn. Willingness to travel to various sites within the City utilizing City of Sunnyvale Vehicle. License/Certificates: Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California class C driver's license and a safe driving record.
