Job Description The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's only dedicated laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The National Bioenergy Center at NREL has an opening for a full-time intern in the catalytic conversion of biomass to advantaged fuels and chemicals. The intern will apply state-of-the-art experimental tools to catalytically convert biomass and biologically-derived intermediates to fuels and chemicals. Job activities will include operating batch reactors for screening catalyst materials, supporting the operation of continuous reactors for catalyst testing, developing distillation protocols to separate fuels and chemicals, and applying analytical techniques to determine the chemical and physical properties of fuel and chemicals. The intern will also assist with literature review, data compilation and analysis, and presentations to summarize findings. Basic Qualifications: Graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Bachelors or Masters degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or closely related field. Minimum of a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. Prior laboratory experience working with chemical or material analytical techniques within a laboratory setting. . Basic Qualifications Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. Additional Qualifications Experience with analytic chemistry methods, catalytic processes, and associated terminology; experience searching, reading, and interpreting peer-reviewed journal articles; experience working with Microsoft Office software tools. Preferred Qualifications Preferred Qualifications: Experience with physical and chemical characterization of heterogeneous catalysts; experience with fuel property analysis; experience with biomass conversion; experience with preparative bench-scale distillation. .
