PTS College Intern - Public Works Salary $15.64 - $19.81 Hourly Location Santa Clarita, CA Job Type Part-time/Temporary/Seasonal Department Public Works Job Number 2019-05 Closing 5/30/2019 12:00 PM Pacific Description/Duties & Responsibilities The City of Santa Clarita is committed to providing a challenging and meaningful work experience for college students. The City offers unique opportunities for students to gain hands-on and in-depth experience in a variety of disciplines related to local, regional, state, and federal government operations. We provide real world work assignments, which provide interns the opportunity to work side-by-side with professional City staff committed to teamwork and providing superior municipal services to the community of Santa Clarita. The chosen candidate will have the opportunity to work with one or all of the following Public Works divisions: Administration, Building & Safety, Capital Improvement Projects, General Services, and Traffic & Transportation Planning. This candidate will also contribute to various assignments that both assist with future planning of Public Works projects/programs and help identify opportunities for improvement with current processes. A minimum of 20-25 hours per week is preferred. Duration of the internship is approximately 3-4 months beginning June 2019. DESCRIPTION/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Work on department and Citywide special projects - Research, collect, and analyze data - Assist in achieving department goals and objectives - Meet/collaborate with various staff, other agencies, etc. to obtain information on assigned projects - Provide administrative support, as needed Education and Experience If you are currently an undergraduate student or recent graduate with your field of study being Business Administration, Political Science, Social Science, or a related field, and are interested in gaining meaningful hands-on work experience at the local government level, this opportunity may be for you. Knowledge and Abilities General understanding of governmental organizations and municipal operations. - Research techniques, survey methods, and data collection. - Understand and implement office etiquette and excellent customer service. - Flexibility and ability to handle multiple priorities. - Strong oral and written communication skills. - Ability to foster effective working relationships with all levels of staff and the community. - Computer experience, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. - Basic knowledge of budget/financial analysis.
