# BFT VIDEO INTERNSHIP FOR MGH! Bulfinch Temps is looking for a Video Intern to work in the Office of News and Public Affairs at Massachusetts General Hospital. This position is 40 hours per week (830A-5P) starting in June. Please note that this position is temporary in nature and is not eligible for benefits. # Overview of Internship Program The MassachusettsGeneral Hospital (MGH) News and Public Affairs Video Internship Program offersa variety of responsibilities and tasks that will supplement the scholastictraining of a student who may wish to pursue a career in multimedia journalism,communications, or public relations. The student intern will assist with variousvideo projects, print publications, media relations and other public affairsactivities for the MGH. Day-to-day responsibilities will vary, depending on theneeds and activities of the department, as well as the interns interests andabilities. The MGH News and PublicAffairs Office will offer interns the opportunity to shoot video on a CanonDSLR camera and edit videos on Final Cut Pro X or iMovie, write forpublications, and accompany News and Public Affairs staff on media shoots. Thework will include some clerical duties. TheNews and Public Affairs video intern will be expected to work on several video projects.These projects include coordinating and filming interviews as part of thehospitals Diversity and Inclusion program; shooting and editing videos toaccompany stories in newsletters, as well as news releases. The intern will also be expected to filmvideos covering special events around the MGH, including the employee picnic inJune, awards ceremonies and important hospital visitors. The intern will attendthe weekly staff meeting and will be called upon to attend meetings, interviewsand photo shoots with other staff members. ** ** **Public Affairs Office** The MGH News and PublicAffairs Office is a comprehensive communications resource to the MGH communityproviding official hospital spokespersons, creating printed materialsnewsletters, and developing both media response and initiation strategies. The News and PublicAffairs Office serves as the principal clearinghouse for hospital communications,both internal and external, evaluating and ensuring their accuracy,appropriateness and consistency with the MGH mission. The day-to-dayoperations of the News and Public Affairs Office are overseen by the SeniorVice President. The primary functions of the office are publications and mediarelations, and both areas require writing, project coordination and clericalsupport. Staff members are involved in both areas, though individuals tend tobe focused in a particular function. The News and PublicAffairs team consists of 11 professional staff members. Office hours are Monday through Friday from8:30 am to 5 pm, though many occasions call for flexibility because of mediarelations requirements and other projects. A News and Public Affairs staff member is on-call 24 hours a day bybeeper, a duty which is rotated among full-time staff members. **Publications** TheNews and Public Affairs staff writes, edits, designs and produces many of theMGHs printed materials, such as newsletter, invitations, news releases andfact sheets. News and Public Affairsalso offers professional consultation throughout the process, helping to keepprojects on target, on time and on budget. Responsibilitiesinclude overseeing the design, editorial content, photography, printing anddistribution of MGHs main newsletter within the hospital and providingguidance and design support to hospital departments producing their ownpublications. Members of the News and PublicAffairs staff work closely with administration to ensure the integrity of thehospitals graphic identity, and act as a resource for questions or concernspertaining to the distribution of printed information throughout the hospitalcommunity. Publicationsproduced by the Public Affairs Office include _Hotline_, a weekly internal publication; Awards and Honors e-newsletter, MGH Alumni Newsletter; andvarious other invitations, programs and newsletters for hospital departments orspecial events. **Media Relations** Asa world-renowned center for patient care, teaching and research, the MGHreceives widespread media coverage. Newsand Public Affairs works with MGH staff to respond to inquiries from thepress. In addition, the News and PublicAffairs staff is always seeking to learn about clinical programs and researchfindings that may be of interest to the media. Themedia relations function involves working with local, regional and nationalreporters from a variety of print and broadcast media to respond to requestsabout the ongoing work of the hospital and its staff, to increase thehospitals visibility, and to educate the public about health information.Staff members field numerous daily requests from reporters seeking anappropriate spokesperson on a wide variety of issues. News and Public Affairs staff members workclosely with hospital employees and staff to develop stories that may be ofinterest to media, including upcoming research articles, human intereststories, profiles and events that are happening throughout the hospital community. **Museum** The Paul S. Russell, MD Museum ofMedical History and Innovation tells the rich story of Mass General throughinteractive media displays, artifacts and photographs. Visitors can learn aboutthe hospital's important contributions to the medical field and see how thesediscoveries and advancements have shaped the present and how the hospital cancontinue to shape the future of medicine. The Russell Museum is dedicated todrawing connections between innovations spanning a period of more than 200 years from the hospitals charter in 1811 to present day. **Special Projects** Newsand Public Affairs is frequently called upon by departments throughout thehospital to help coordinate special projects including representation oncommittees, special one-time-only events and ongoing activities, the hospitalArchives, and various long-term administrative projects. Duties may include providing staff support tothe administrative leadership meetings; coordinating publicity for an event;and arranging for photography for an important celebration. News and PublicAffairs staff members provide support and guidance to both internal andexternal contacts and help to ensure that a project meets in goals. # Work Environment The News and PublicAffairs Office is a fast-paced, team-oriented environment that calls forflexibility and an eagerness to supply the best quality of work possible. The News and Public Affairs video intern willbe expected to work with all News and Public Affairs staff members and may becalled upon to work with members of other departments.
