Intern - Accounting (Fall) Location: Seattle - Pacific Science Center Job Code: 1013 # of Openings: 1 Description Accounting & Finance Intern Status: Part-Time, Temporary, Unpaid Department: Accounting Division: Accounting Reports to: Controller Purpose/ Summary: Pacific Science Center brings science to life. Our award-winning, interactive programs reach more than 1.3 million people around the state each year in their communities, classrooms and on our campus. We offer a wide variety of exhibits and programs, including standards-based formal and informal science education programs and an award-winning environmental education center. The Accounting & Finance team at Pacific Science Center seeks to help the organization run a smart and responsible business. The Accounting Intern will support the efforts of the Accounting & Finance team by assisting in various elements of the monthly accounting cycle, such as Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and other areas tailored to the interests of the Intern. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: ? Complete a project of interest (financial analysis, accounts receivable/payable optimization, etc.) ? Record various economic events through journal entries in our general ledger software (including accounts payable & accounts receivable entries). ? Assist the accounting team with weekly & monthly document maintenance. ? Work collaboratively with the Accounting & Finance team and other Science Center staff to perform other duties as assigned. ? Receive training in Microsoft Dynamics GP and have the opportunity to apply accounting knowledge in a workplace environment. ? Experiment with data mining and advanced excel functions (including power query & power pivot). ? Strengthen communication skills through diverse interactions with a variety of Science Center staff. ? Gain insight into the inner-workings of a successful accounting & finance team with a demanding workload. ? It may be possible to address additional learning objectives during the course of the internship. Demonstrate an introductory knowledge of US GAAP compliant accounting principles and fundamental concepts of the accrual basis of accounting. ? Strong technical and organizational skills in addition to excellent written and verbal communication skills. ? Enthusiasm for learning about Pacific Science Centers mission, programs and the workings of a not-for-profit organization. ? Ability to work both cooperatively with other people and also independently, taking ownership over processes and procedures. Qualifications: Required: ? At least 18 years of age ? Pass a criminal background check ? Must be able to provide three references (at least 1 professional) ? Must be actively enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited local university, with a major in accounting or finance and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. Preferred: ? Candidates working towards a degree in Finance or Accounting ? Experience in accounting and/or finance Physical Demands/ Working Conditions: General conditions of work environment (office or other) noise level, requirements for bending, lifting, etc. Include vision, hearing, use of hands to lift or grasp objects. A program series typically runs 1 day/week at each site for 5 weeks (a few will run daily at a site for one week). At least a 5 week commitment to at least 1 program series is preferred (about 6 hr/week for 5 weeks), to ensure consistency throughout the delivery of a program series. We highly recommend committing to more than one program series to allow for a more in-depth volunteer experience.
