The Research Intern is responsible for performing work in support of scientific research which provides practical experience for beginners in a research related field; using advanced skills and knowledge to perform the following non-inclusive list of tasks, perform complex investigative procedures; modifies procedures to accomplish research goals; collect, process and analyze data; run research protocols; assist in preparing manuscripts for journals or presentations for conferences. Additional Information Benefits Competitive benefits available hrs.wsu.edu/benefits The Position Responsibilities 70% Laboratory Research Applies scientific knowledge to perform professional research under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI). Assist PI with research in cancer immunotherapy and analysis of immune functions in mouse model including handling experimental animals, measuring tumor growth, harvesting tissue and organs, isolating cells, cell transfer, PCR, qPCR, western blotting, flow cytometry analysis, histology, and microscopy. Maintain and grow human and mouse cancer cells. Assists in the modification of procedures to accomplish research goals. Independently runs standard research protocols. Collects and records research data, verifies accuracy, analyzes research results; assists in the development of conclusion and summary of research findings. Assist PI with the following: prepare research results and written summaries of results in manuscript form for publications and in graphics form for presentation at research meetings and for grant proposals. Attend and present during regular laboratory meetings. ________________________________________ 15% Laboratory Maintenance Monitor, order and stock lab supplies. Assist with inventory maintenance. Participate with washing dishes and laboratory cleaning. Maintain safe laboratory environment at all times. Properly dispose of laboratory waste, biomedical waste, broken glassware, and any other hazardous materials. Keep laboratory clean and organized. ________________________________________ 10% Animal Handling Under general supervising conduct animal research. Responsible for conducting experimental planning with mice. Responsible for mouse studies including alcohol feeding, measurement of tumor growth, and collection of urine and tissue samples. Appointment Status Temporary Job Appointment (FTE%) 100% Position Term in Months 12 Monthly Salary $2,500.00 Position Qualifications Required Qualifications A Bachelors degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent related field experience performing professional-level work with scientific or clinical research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; interviewing experience; excellent organizational and project management skills. Additional Requirements Bachelors Degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Cell Biology or a closely related field. Preferred Qualifications Experience with common laboratory procedures, such as preparation and standardization of solutions and constructing recombinant plasmids. Experience with animal handling. Experience with cell culture. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience which demonstrates the ability to work independently and with groups.
