Apply now. The Acute Care (AC) Coding Apprentice Program is a six month program designed for newly credentialed coders with less than least six months experience. This program will provide the apprentice with training, education and hands on coding experience needed to move into a Banner HIMS Coder position. The AC Coding Apprentice program is designed to provide general education for credentialed coders without at least six months practical experience. AC Coding leaders and educators have collaborated to create a comprehensive program that will build an apprentice coders knowledge, skills, and abilities to be a successful HIMS Coder. Essential Functions * Learns to analyze, evaluate and abstract data elements from patients electronic records. * Learns to assign applicable ICD diagnoses and ICD & CPT procedure codes for all inpatient and outpatient encounters, following all written coding policies and procedures in accordance with Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant and all regulatory CMS compliance regulations. * Works as a member of the HIMS team on a variety of assigned projects and tasks. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge and specialized formal training in medical record keeping principles and practices, anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical terminology, standard nomenclature, and classification of diagnoses and procedures. Requires current enrollment or recent completion of accredited coding certificate program through AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or CPC through AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) or Certified Coding Specialist-Physician (CCS-P). Must demonstrate basic knowledge of ICD/CPT coding principles and the recommended AHIMA coding competencies. Should be familiar with pharmacologic agents. Effective human relations skills are required for interacting with all levels of hospital staff, physicians, and other contacts. Must have highly developed interpersonal and team building skills. Must be able to work effectively with all common office software. Preferred Qualifications Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
