Accounting / Finance Intern General Accounting Office 100 N. 15th Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85007 www.azdoa.gov JOB SUMMARY: The State of Arizona General Accounting Office (GAO) is responsible for establishing Statewide accounting policies and procedures, managing the Arizona Financial Information System (AFIS), administering the Statewide Payroll through the Human Resources Information Solution (HRIS), preparing the Statewide Financial Reports, and improving the financial and accounting processes of the State of Arizona. The General Accounting Office is currently recruiting for several accounting or finance interns. An intern in this position may perform a variety of accounting tasks, including: * Entering transactions in the States accounting system, AFIS (Arizona Financial Information System); transactions may include: cash receipts, payment requests, encumbrances, fixed asset entry, program setup, etc. * Assisting in aspects of the fixed asset life cycle * Completing or assisting with account reconciliations, for a given time period * Creating custom reports and/or accrual basis reports, or running system generated reports for an end user * Performing data analysis, and recommending improvements to accounting processes * Participating in specialized projects These tasks, combined with specific training will allow an intern in this position, to gain a better understanding of government fund accounting and the application of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) principles. This internship may also include an opportunity for an intern to extend their internship and work part-time with other state agencies to gain broader governmental accounting experience. We hope to be able to continue to extend this opportunity in the future. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): * Proficiency with Microsoft products: Excel, Word, and Access * Knowledge of G Suite (Google Apps) including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Sheets, Docs, Forms and Sites * Understanding of accrual basis accounting concepts * Strong analytical and problem solving skills * Strong communication skills (verbal and written) * Excellent interpersonal skills SELECTIVE PREFERENCE(S): This internship will be COMPENSATED and it is up to the discretion of the respective school to provide academic credit. Work schedule will be flexible to coincide with class schedule. * Candidate must be in a Junior or Senior at an accredited 4-year College or University with a focus in accounting or finance, and have completed their intermediate accounting/finance coursework. * The ideal candidate should maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better. * Candidate must have the unrestricted right to work in the US without requiring sponsorship.
