Wastewater Process Optimization Intern Salary $15.67 - $20.00 Hourly Location Boulder Water Resource Recovery Facility, CO Job Type Temporary Department Public Works Job Number 2019-00165 Closing 6/30/2019 11:59 PM Mountain Work Schedule 6 to 8-hour shifts, 3-4 days per week Overall Job Objective The intern will work under direct supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Process Engineer on experimental studies and process analyses at the City of Boulder's Water Resource Recovery Facility (BWRRF) to optimize nutrient removal capacity of existing infrastructure, inform planning for future permit limits, and increase staff understanding of our wastewater treatment process. The intern will assist with energy efficiency initiatives, process modeling, data organization and analysis, and other activities related to the goals of the BWRRF. Internship Duration: approximately 6 months Timeline: July 1 December 31, 2019 Work Schedule: 24-30 hours a week generally during Mon Fri between 7am 5pm Duties & Responsibilities Assist treatment process engineer while in the field Devise and review experimental designs Conduct laboratory and field testing Acquisition of data via handheld instrumentation and chemical tests Compilation and analysis of data from field testing, experiments, and/or facility databases Present data in technical reports/memos and presentations Qualifications REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Ability to successfully work independently or with a superior. Basic knowledge of water chemistry, pipetting techniques, rapid analysis tests, and handheld instrumentation. Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in environmental engineering, biology, chemistry, or other closely related field or a combination of education and experience. Base-level knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of wastewater treatment. Willingness to learn relevant laboratory and field techniques. Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS In addition to the required minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, biology, chemistry, or other closely related field. Knowledge of current and impending water quality regulations, including knowledge of environmental and health effects driving the regulation development. Any experience working in an environmental laboratory or at a water or wastewater treatment facility. Background in computer applications relating to the wastewater field, including process modeling software. Experience with databases. Colorado Class D Wastewater Operator certification, or other water related operator certification. Supplemental Information Working Conditions Required physical and mental effort, and environmental conditions: In addition to the information listed above: Physical demands and mental effort: Physical ability to work in and around equipment, in areas of limited access, elevated structures, and confined spaces requiring standing, walking, lifting, bending, and kneeling; occasionally lift and carry sixty-five pounds; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and laboratory equipment; vision for reading, recording, and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and occasionally the public. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, and changing priorities and conditions. Work Environment: Works primarily in wastewater laboratory and office settings but also includes working outdoors and in the wastewater treatment facility setting up analytical instruments, pilot research equipment, and automatic samplers and collecting field measurements and samples. Works in a setting subject to interruptions and background noises. Machines and equipment used in work include but are not limited to the following: laboratory equipment, analytical instruments, sample collection equipment, personal computers, telephones, calculators, copy/fax/scanning machines, small hand tools.
