Principal Scientific Engineering Associate Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, United States Updated: about 10 hours ago Location: State College, PENNSYLVANIA Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Chemical Sciences Division has an immediate opening for a Principal Scientific Engineering Associate (SEA) to join the team. The Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP) seeks a Principal Scientific Engineering Associate who will provide critical scientific support for core experimental research programs in the development of a solar fuels device. A core task will be to ensure continuous, safe, and efficient operation of all essential laboratory capabilities. The Principal SEA will be expected to lead in the fabrication and development of semiconductor and electrode assemblies, devices, test beds and related experimental apparatuses. This will include contributing innovative approaches for achieving highly efficient and selective CO2 reduction devices, realizing them in practice, and developing techniques for evaluating their performance. This position will be part-time with the possibility of converting to full-time. What You Will Do: * Independently troubleshoot and resolve complex instrument issues to ensure maximum operational capabilities for JCAP at all times. * Lead in the development and installation of new or custom experimental capabilities that are central to JCAP mission and goals. * Serve as an in-house expert/first point of contact on product analysis tools and support the development of custom test instrumentation. * Be responsible for the acquisition, operation, and upgrading of research equipment as needed. * Serve as safety activity lead for several of the JCAP laboratories by supporting and reinforcing a strong safety culture throughout the Center. * Co-supervision of graduate and undergraduate laboratory assistants, including training of scientific personnel on operating procedures and providing scientific consultation on the utilization of equipment for achieving project objectives. * Prepare reports, journal articles, and presentations. What is Required: * Bachelors degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of 6-8 years related professional technical experience. * Hands-on experience working with vacuum, deposition, and/or characterization systems is strongly desired. * Ability to organize and interpret scientific data with good attention to detail. * Strong written and oral presentation skills. * Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and handle growing responsibilities as the project evolves. * Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal instruction, determine methods and procedures for achieving both near- and long-term research goals. * Ability to coordinate research activities of students and postdocs. Additional Desired Qualifications : * Masters degree in a related field . The posting shall remain open until the position is filled. Notes: * This is a part-time 1 year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. * Part-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay. * Salary is commensurate with experience. * This position may be subject to a background check.
