MSU Billings is unique in that it is one of a select few higher education institutions that also boasts an embedded two-year community college. The University opened in 1927 and was initially called Eastern Montana State Normal School at Billings and was established to prepare teachers for elementary schools in eastern Montana. MSU Billings has grown, with the city of Billings and Yellowstone County, into the major urban comprehensive higher education center of south central and eastern Montana. The University campus consists of four colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Education and the College of Allied Health Professions. Seven miles west of the University campus sits City College at MSU Billings, which serves the comprehensive two-year mission of the university. - Duties and Responsibilities - The Advising and Career Specialist position is designed to provide a holistic advising experience for students. This position provides advising, retention outreach, and career guidance to students. This position specifically focuses on the First Year Experience, including instruction on the First Year seminar course. The Advising and Career Specialist is proactive in contacting students on a regular basis and guiding students as they progress toward their educational goals; specifically focusing on first year student populations. This position acts as a liaison between students and departments. This position meets individually with students to assist with items such as, but not limited to: course registration, plans of study, career exploration, resume reviews, and job search strategies. This position interprets placement scores to place students in appropriate level courses. The Advising and Career Specialist recommends appropriate courses and course load based on students academic ability, personal obligations, and career goals. This position must be able to utilize student information systems and career exploration programs to effectively assist students. The Advising and Career Specialist supports students with setting goals and connecting desired outcomes with current activities, time management, and developing critical thinking skills; advises and provides outreach to students on Academic Probation; and advises and provides outreach to students who receive a D/F/W/I in previous semester course(s). Advising and Career Specialist must maintain familiarity with programs. The position must be able to communicate with students in person and/or by e-mail, mail, phone, web conferencing, and text messaging. The specialists must be able to understand how diversity, differences, and institutional/social barriers influence the student experience in order to effectively practice inclusive advising strategies for all students. This position will participate and assist during all orientation programs and other enrollment related events; collect, analyze, and report data with regard to services provided to students, student progress, student satisfaction, etc.; participate and assist with all career related events; maintain accurate and detailed advising notes through the system; track advisees performance during and at the end of each semester; maintain records for current and previous students in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); and maintain and update CareerLink records and information. - Required Qualifications Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills - Masters Degree Experience in one or more of the following: advising, orientation, retention, career exploration, or mentoring roles Knowledge of the typical problems encountered by undergraduate students in selecting a course of study and in successfully preparing a plan of study to prepare for entry into a degree program Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships Ability to organize a wide range of complex tasks and attention to detail Excellent written and oral communication skills Excellent interpersonal skills Montana State University Billings (MSUB) will only consider applicants for this position who are authorized to work in the US.
