Retiree medical benefits available The City of Sunnyvale is seeking a Plan Check Engineer to provide building construction inspections. The Building Safety team works as one solution-driven, cohesive team, and encourages leadership from the ground-up (are you the next Plan Check Engineer to join the team?) . This position is part of a 21-person building safety team that includes plan checking, inspection and administrative staff; the team works on a variety of projects from single-family maintenance, remodel and commercial tenant improvements in existing and new buildings, new construction of large development projects of townhomes, apartments, hotels, and Class A office buildings. The City of Sunnyvale is known for a focus on service including the timely processing of permits and development plans. Under supervision of the Senior Plan Check Engineer, performs professional duties involving the review and checking of building and site plans to ensure compliance with City codes and ordinances and performs related work as assigned. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in plans, specifications and structural calculations for a range of residential, commercial, office and industrial buildings, is a good communicator to coworkers, contractors and other members of the public, and will be able to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive reports, correspondence and other required documents. The candidate will advise professional engineers, architects and others concerning code requirements, engineering and planning problems arising in the preliminary design of buildings; assists building inspectors in difficult or unusual code interpretation; ensure safe construction of building based on structural adequacy and compliance with building codes; and other related duties of a plan check engineer. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Plan Check Engineer is a fully qualified journey-level professional classification. This classification is responsible for checking building permit applications for residential, commercial, industrial, and public assembly construction. This classification differs from Plan Checker in that the Plan Check Engineer is a registered engineer. This classification is further distinguished from the Senior Plan Check Engineer in that the Senior Plan Check Engineer has full supervisory responsibility for staff. Essential Job Functions (May include, but are not limited to, the following): Reviews plans, specifications, and structural calculations submitted for residential, commercial, and industrial developments to insure compliance with all building codes, ordinances, and regulations. Advises professional engineers, architects, and others concerning code requirements, engineering, and planning problems arising in the preliminary design of buildings and structures. Prepares code complying lists during plan review. Assists Building Inspectors in difficult or unusual code interpretation as it applies to various structures. Works closely with and provides information to professional engineers, architects, contractors, and the general public regarding building code and other general requirements concerning buildings and structures. Ensures safe construction of buildings based on structural adequacy and compliance with building codes. May issue permits after review of plans and make random inspections of major projects. WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper, books and documents weighing up to 25 pounds is also required. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience: The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in structural or civil engineering, architecture or a related field; AND Four years of progressively responsible experience in civil or structural engineering experience. Knowledge of: Principles and practices of structural and non-structural design and plan review. Codes, laws, and regulations as related to Titles 19 and 24 of the California Administrative Code, Title 20 of the Municipal Code, Uniform Building, Plumbing and Mechanical Codes. Site plans and architectural designs to determine compliance with appropriate State and local codes and ordinances. Structural engineering principles and practices as applied to building design and construction. Building construction procedures and practices. Office methods, procedures, software and equipment. Ability to: Read and interpret site plans, building plans, specifications, calculations, and codes and determine compliance with appropriate codes and ordinances. Examine and note deficiencies of plans, calculations and specifications. Organize and maintain a variety of records, including statistical permit processing data. Operate a computer using word processing and business software and other office equipment. Coordinating the flow of assigned work. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain and promote positive and effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, the general public, contractors and design professionals. Demonstrate initiative and exercise good judgment in the performance of duties. Work independently and as a team member; recognize and set priorities and meet deadlines. Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner. Licenses/Certificates: Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license or the ability to provide alternative transportation as approved by the appointing authority and a safe driving record. Possession and continued maintenance of registration as a professional civil or structural engineer issued by the State of California. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS A Master's degree in structural engineering. Possession and continued maintenance of certification as an ICC Plans Examiner, residential and commercial.
