NPS-New River Gorge National River - Internship (1765-984) Tracking Code 1765-984 Job Description Length: Term of positions is 26 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk Location: Glen Jean, WV Living Allowance: $550/week AmeriCorps Award: Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $2,960 (pre-tax). Start Date: 8/5/2019 Application Due Date: Preference given to applicants that submit application by 7/26/2019 Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIPP in partnership with the National Parks Service (NPS) are seeking an intern who will assist in conserving and protecting historic sites and structures, maintaining the visitor centers, offices, and other buildings necessary for park operations. Stewards members will work alongside park maintenance staff to reduced deferred maintenance backlog on park structures and sites. Position Details New River Gorge National River Maintenance Division has been charged to conserve and protect historic sites and structures, maintain the visitor centers, offices, and other buildings necessary for park operations, look after almost a hundred miles of trails and vistas, and ensure that all of these structures and sites are safe to visitors and staff alike. Many park buildings and trails have developed a backlog of deferred maintenance and long-standing infrastructure needs. Stewards members would work hand in hand alongside New River maintenance employees, regional and national NPS subject matter maintenance experts, other Federal agencies, and volunteers to address the infrastructure concerns and deferred maintenance around the park. This work will greatly help and improve the park for everyone. Stewards members will work alongside park maintenance staff to reduced deferred maintenance backlog on park structures and sites. Infrastructure work will be done to improve assets' conditions and sustainability for enhanced life cycle of the assets. Stewards duties would include performing construction and maintenance duties on buildings, trails, and other park assets. Intern should have a working knowledge of several trade skills, positive work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to work well with others. Park staff will be able to train interns on job specifics, but duties may include utilizing skills and tools in the areas of building construction/demolition, general carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, trail work, general vehicle operation, and require some heavy lifting and physical effort. The physical effort required is considered moderate to heavy and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects and/or materials over 75 lbs., while using the proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. The incumbent must frequently stand while working, climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, and crawl beneath buildings. He/she is required to step, bend, kneel, climb, and walk while performing the work in all manners of environmental conditions such as snow, mud, heat, and rain.
