The mission of the Orange County Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) is to enhance the quality of life for children and families by establishing and enforcing court orders for the financial and medical support of children in an effective, efficient and professional manner ( 

DCSS is seeking an extern for its Legal Services Unit. Ideally, the candidate would complete this externship for academic credit during the fall 2019 semester. Hours are flexible.

The goal of DCSS is to provide the extern with personal and professional growth opportunities, which are directly related to the person’s academic studies. The ideal candidate for this position must have completed at least one (1) year of law school at an ABA-accredited institution and a course in civil procedure. Completion of a family law course is desired, but is not required.

The extern position is primarily one of legal research and writing. The candidate should have strong legal research and writing skills as well as strong analytical abilities. Additionally, the candidate must have the ability to multi-task and handle a variety of assignments of varying difficulty with assorted deadlines. The primary duties will include responding to law and motion filings (primarily motions brought by non-custodial or custodial parents), as well as conducting legal research on issues as the needs of the Legal Services Unit require. Duties may include review of cases for non-payment of child support for possible civil contempt/probation violation filings.
