The Exception is currently looking for talented BSW and MSW interns. Our organization offers two training paths in alignment with the social work profession . This volunteer internship opportunity offers training and supervision by an ACSW with over 5 years of experience providing community and clinical supportive services to vulnerable populations. Our ACSW is supervised by an LCSW that provides direct oversight and support, meeting internship requirements for MSW students as well as defined by CSWE [for accredited programs].
The Exception is a 501(c)3 that provides supportive services focused on strengthening individual resiliency to identified communities in the California region where community statistics and data demonstrate a dire need. This includes low-income (underserved) communities where the social detriments of poverty are the greatest, as reflected by high crime, incarceration rates, DCFS system involvement rates, and high school dropout rates. The Exception understands that in order to mend broken communities, individuals and families must have access to the supportive tools and services necessary for improving the quality of life. The Exception is unique in that we provide programs that address wellness on 5 key components: social, psychological, financial, physical, spiritual. The Exception facilitates delivery of life skills classes, psycho-ed., personal development and support groups by partnering with other community based organizations. The Exception is committed to eliminating barriers both physical and psychological by offering services via Zoom Telehealth.

Requirements
Training Path 1
This path is for social work students that are interested in pursuing a career in behavioral health and plan on pursuing a degree in social work (MSW) or another related behavioral health field (M.S, M.A, MFT). Interns will have direct service training, working with individuals and families experiencing economic hardship, marginalization and other social detriments.
Interns may co-facilitate psycho educational programs and life skills classes under the supervision of a clinical social worker, clinical counselor or a trained professional including but not limited to :
Including:
- Biopsychosocial Assessments
- Strengths and Needs Assessments
- Safety and Risk Assessments
- Intake Documentation (Participant Information Docs, Pre Survey, Case Management Notes, Applicable Assessments)
- 90 Day Progress Documentation (Post Survey, Case Management Notes, Client Progress Notes and assessments if applicable.)
Provide additional supportive services deemed necessary and directed under the support of ACSW.
Responsibilities:
Training Path 2
This path is for social work students that are interested in a career in community social work. This path is also open to students studying an alternative humanities degree such as human services, sociology, etc. This training path includes comprehensive leadership training in the non profit sector and focuses on community strengthening and capacity building via program development.
Interns will work closely with nonprofit management and leadership which includes an interdisciplinary team of business, marketing, social work and clinical professionals. Interns receive supervision and support from an identified direct supervisor and an ACSW or LCSW that provides oversight for social work/community non profit operations.
