Our story
The Institute for Public Policy and Economic Development at Wilkes University has offices in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Institute mobilizes the resources of regional institutions of higher education to engage in regional research, strategy development, and impact reports. Wilkes University, as the founder and managing partner in The Institute, collaborates closely with Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, Johnson College, Keystone College, Kings College, Lackawanna College, Luzerne County Community College, Marywood University, Misericordia University, Penn State Wilkes-Barre, Penn State Scranton, The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education, and the University of Scranton.

The Institute offers internships to students from our ten member institutions, of any academic major. An internship will allow a student to participate in essential research, analysis, and dissemination.

Internship Duration: One semester

Student Role: Students conduct primary and secondary applied research; qualitative and quantitative analysis and interpretation; and assist in the preparation of studies and reports.

Student Qualifications: Students must be computer literate, have excellent research, written, and verbal communication skills. Students must possess a GPA of 3.2 or higher and be entering or in their junior or senior year of an undergrad. program or be a grad. student. Acceptance is based on a competitive process which includes an interview, reference, and writing sample.

Location: Students can complete their internship at either of our two offices located in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, PA.

Oversight: The Institute will serve as the entity monitoring student activity.

Credit/Hours: Varies by institution

Stipends: Based on credit hours and whether intern is from a participating institution

Learning objectives: Students can expect to learn all aspects of a research based organization that includes primary and secondary research, and quantitative and qualitative analysis. Research includes both proprietary client work and community based research. Products include research studies, white papers, and policy briefs.
