Job Overview

The County of Santa Clara is seeking a Paralegal to join the Public Defender's office. As a Paralegal, you will work under the general supervision of an attorney, assisting in the preparation of cases for trial, drafting legal documents, conducting client interviews, and performing legal research and writing. The senior level of this position involves handling more complex legal duties. This is a full-time position located throughout the County of Santa Clara, CA.

Compensation

  • Salary Range: $75,787 - $91,707 a year
  • Pay Frequency: Annually
  • Job Type: Full-time

Responsibilities

  • Gathers and compiles evidence for attorneys
  • Prepares trial notebooks and organizes evidence and exhibits
  • Conducts interviews with clients, witnesses, and others
  • Acts as a liaison between clients and attorneys
  • Determines eligibility for client assistance and rehabilitation programs
  • Coordinates with public and private agencies, law enforcement agencies, and witnesses
  • Logs and tracks cases to ensure timeline adherence
  • Arranges witness presence and prepares witnesses for testimony
  • Drafts and prepares legal documents and correspondence
  • Performs basic legal research and cite checking
  • Files legal documents in court and delivers case materials
  • Provides assistance to attorneys in court proceedings
  • Maintains a law library
  • Performs other related duties as required

Requirements

  • Possession of one of the following:
    • Paralegal certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved program
    • Paralegal certificate or degree from a nationally or regionally accredited post-secondary institution with a minimum of 24 law-related units
    • Baccalaureate or advanced degree in any subject, plus one year of attorney supervised* law-related experience
    • High school diploma or GED, plus three years of attorney supervised* law-related experience
  • Written declaration from an attorney* affirming qualifications for paralegal tasks
  • Completion of Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credits every two years
  • One year of experience as a paralegal (for Senior Paralegal position)
