Job Overview

The editorial intern will play a critical role in POLITICO's coverage of politics and policy in California. Based in our Sacramento office, you will have the opportunity to pitch, report, and write stories for our influential audience. You will also work closely with our California Playbook team to contribute to our daily newsletter on politics in the Golden State. This internship will provide hands-on experience in all aspects of content creation and production, including research, reporting, writing, editing, and aggregating. It is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about politics and policy.

Compensation

  • $23 per hour

Responsibilities

  • Pitch, report, and write stories of consequence for our audience in California and POLITICO's wider national readership
  • Cover spot news in policy and politics in and around the state capitol
  • Collaborate with our California Playbook team to write and produce daily newsletters on politics in California
  • Engage in all aspects of content creation and production, including research, reporting, writing, editing, and aggregating
  • Be available for work during early morning hours

Requirements

  • A can-do attitude, initiative, good time management, and the ability to work well under pressure
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to develop your own story ideas
  • The ability to write quickly and efficiently while meeting deadlines
  • Prior hands-on experience as an intern at a professional news outlet, preferably with experience working on a student publication
  • A passion for politics and policy, with a desire to learn about California politics and government
  • A commitment to fair-minded and nonpartisan journalism
  • 3-5 clips of original work (preferred)
  • Recent graduates are welcome to apply. Applicants still in school must be rising juniors or above and have experience at a school publication or a professional news outlet.
