Job Overview

By assisting the City Manager's support staff in the performance of their duties, the City Manager's Office Intern is given the opportunity to learn about city management and the functions and activities of municipal government. This position serves as an entry-level position designed to expose the student intern to operational, budgetary, and policy functions managed by the department. The intern will assist team members on existing or new projects and will gain work experience to increase their ability to compete in the workforce for other entry-level positions.

Compensation

  • Graduate Intern Pay range: $19.87 - $21.93
  • Undergrad Intern Pay range: $16.96 - $18.42

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the implementation and promotion of projects related to the City's Work Plan.
  • Assist with drafting reports, memorandums, and presentations to advance City Manager's Office and City Council priorities.
  • Assist with public relations for the City Manager's office: conduct City tours, draft press releases or articles, write proclamations, and resolve citizen complaints.
  • Undertake research projects to assist with the development or advancement of priority programs.
  • Assist with the coordination and promotion of City events to advance City Manager's Office priorities.
  • Fosters a positive and supportive work environment; promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace, contributing to an environment of respectful living and working in a multicultural society.
  • Performs functions as assigned in the City's emergency response plan in the event of an emergency.
  • Perform other duties as needed in support of City Manager's Office.

Requirements

  • Education: Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited college or university, preferably pursuing a degree related to public policy.
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, and computer skills required.
  • Ability to work and communicate well with a wide range of people, including elected officials, City Manager, City department heads, Kirkland staff, and City residents.
  • Ability to work independently and quickly.
  • Some computer skills. Knowledge of Excel and Word desirable.
