Job Overview

The Boring Company is dedicated to tackling the issue of traffic congestion by developing an underground network of tunnels. Our mission is to increase tunneling speed and reduce costs significantly, with the ultimate goal of enabling rapid transit across densely populated areas. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will be entrusted with substantial responsibility, as we value ownership and expect all employees (including interns) to take ownership of their projects. Responsibilities

  • Design or support the design of various systems and sub-systems related to operations, including boring machine parts, support systems, support system equipment, tunnel segment production, passenger/construction vehicles, and tunnel infrastructure.
  • Utilize judgment, hand calculations, FEA, and CAD to develop and communicate designs effectively.
  • Adhere to project schedules and ensure timely completion from conception to implementation.
  • Communicate schedules to stakeholders and parties dependent on the systems, promptly notifying them of any schedule changes.
  • Continually assess how the system fits into the larger picture of a functional operation, ensuring design choices align with top-level requirements while considering future developments.
  • Ensure all systems comply with relevant regulations such as MSHA, OSHA, NEC, NFPA, Class 1 Division 2 Hazardous Location.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 1+ years of experience in design using SolidWorks.
  • Hands-on hardware experience in fabrication, assembly, and/or testing (professional, academic, or recreational).
  • Basic proficiency in machine design.
  • Knowledgeable in mechatronics, mechanism design, fluid power system concepts and design, dynamics, material selection, testing methods, and common machining and fabrication processes.
  • Experience in creating manufacturing drawings.
  • Strong teamwork skills with a proven ability to interact and collaborate effectively with other engineering disciplines.
  • Acute attention to detail.
