Job Overview

The Structures and Facilities Maintenance Section is responsible for the structural safety and maintenance inspection and load rating of all 13,000 (7000 on-system and 6000 off-system) public bridges in Louisiana. This position supports this effort by providing expert structural analysis of findings on all 13,000 bridges in Louisiana for each bridge's service life (75-100 years), by determining if the identified defects found in the routine bridge inspections affect the structural capacity or longevity of the bridge, and by designing appropriate remedies to enhance the useful life of these bridges.

This position independently serves as the statewide bridge load rating engineer with final for the structural evaluation and continuous monitoring of all bridges on public roads in Louisiana for load rating, load posting and truck permit evaluation as mandated by 23 CFR 650. Per the 23 CFR 650 and FHWA NBIS 23 Metric compliance review manual, this includes As-designed, As-built, and Present Condition ratings for all On-System and Off-System bridges. This is a highly technical position that requires a thorough understanding of structural load rating and design engineering specifications as well as State and Federal laws governing load rating of bridges. This position must be available to consult on the evaluation of unique, serious structural problems discovered by DOTD Bridge Inspectors and consultant inspections, and this position has the authority to close the bridge, make recommendations on the repairs needed, and approve repairs completed by the owners.

While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Compensation

  • Salary: $6,871.00 - $12,040.00 Monthly

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and assigns priorities to needs; makes program and budget recommendations to agency administrators.
  • Monitors contract construction and maintenance projects; monitors project progress, reviews plan changes, performs inspections, and recommends final acceptance of completed projects.
  • Reviews the purchase of equipment and materials.
  • Confers with other public agencies concerning district activities, projects, and work force. Investigates and responds to inquiries by public officials and the public.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering and one of the following:
    • Three years of licensed engineering experience.
    • Seven years of professional engineering experience.
  • A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • A Ph.D. in engineering will substitute for two years of the required experience.
  • Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of required experience.
  • Note: Engineering experience gained while licensed as a professional engineer will be accepted as licensed engineering experience.
  • Note: Engineering experience gained after earning an ABET-accredited degree and prior to earning a professional engineer's license will be accepted as professional level engineering experience.
  • Note: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
