Job Overview

The Animal Services Program Coordinator Intern, under the direction of the Animal Services Manager, serves as a key member of the City’s efforts in the animal shelter’s live outcome rate and in solving animal issues in the community. This position creates, implements and evaluates marketing strategies, public information campaigns, and outreach programs to engage the public in ultimately reducing animal shelter intake and getting animals out of the shelter as quickly as possible. Innovation and transparency will guide this position in focusing on the root problems impacting responsible pet ownership, animal shelter intake, and the amount of time animals spend in the shelter. This position will utilize all available avenues of communication, including digital communications, printed materials, social media, and special events.

Responsibilities

  • Engage the community in solving animal issues:
    • Select and utilize appropriate communications channels to engage customers and the community to reunite lost pets with their owners, to prevent shelter intakes, and to be transparent about the shelter’s current needs and capacity issues.
    • Design, develop, and coordinate the distribution of flyers, press releases, and other marketing materials for programs/events and educational purposes.
    • Assist in obtaining donations of money, supplies, and services for the shelter, shelter pets, and owned animals; connect pet owners with available resources.
  • Coordinate and implement special programs and events:
    • Develop and implement creative marketing and advertising plans and disseminate related collateral material.
    • Foster existing and new strategic relationships; collaborate with internal and external stakeholders/partners to further the mission of the animal shelter.
    • Maintain a calendar of outreach activities, community events, workshops, appearances, adoption events, and microchip events.
    • Coordinate, implement, and evaluate special events related to adoptions, volunteers, fosters, rescues, and responsible pet ownership.
  • Utilize social media platforms and other forms of electronic media:
    • Maintain Animal Services web pages and Facebook page with current pictures, announcements, events, statistics, testimonials, and information; train shelter staff and volunteers to assist with updates.
    • Coordinate with shelter staff on integration of the animal shelter database with communications functions.
  • Perform administrative functions:
    • Conduct research projects, assist with budget, reports, open records requests, news clips, mailing lists, presentations, and proclamations.
    • Assist with grant applications, award nominations, speeches, and talking points.
    • Advise the Animal Services Manager of potential problems and opportunities in public relations and marketing.

Requirements

  • Advanced reasoning skills for dealing with customers, volunteers, staff, partner organizations, and advocacy groups.
  • Ability to understand, accept, and effectively communicate organizational procedures, mission, and goals (spay & neuter/disposition/euthanasia/public health).
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in all situations.
