Foster Grandparent (FG)

Job Overview

  • FGs have the responsibility of working on a daily basis, 15-40 hours a week.
  • Volunteers work with children with specific needs in various settings such as schools, day care centers, Head Start centers, and transitional/temporary shelters.
  • FGs are encouraged to closely collaborate with site staff to understand the assigned children and plan activities that best support their development.
  • The FG serves as a compassionate friend and role model for the child during a particular period of their life.

Compensation

  • A non-taxable stipend for program related involvement.
  • Assistance with transportation or mileage reimbursement for program activities.
  • Annual physical examination.
  • A warm meal each day worked.
  • Supplemental accident insurance coverage while working.
  • Pre-service and ongoing monthly training for personal growth.
  • Positive social interactions.
  • Stipend-paid holidays and leave time.
  • Ongoing support and recognition through program newsletters, local and state media, staff working with them, an annual recognition banquet, and other means throughout the year.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with children in a controlled and supervised setting.
  • Provide support and companionship without replacing parents, teachers, counselors, therapists, or paid staff members.
  • Accept and relate to children who may have different lifestyles and values.
  • Respect the child's right to self-determination and independence.
  • Exhibit common sense, maturity, sensitivity, and a sense of responsibility.
  • Follow methodologies and directions from FGP staff and site placement staff.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 55 years of age.
  • Income must be less than 200% of the federal poverty guideline (income exceptions may be made on a non-stipend basis only).
  • No prior experience with children necessary, but helpful.
  • Various physical requirements.
  • Vaccination against COVID-19 is mandatory for Education and Children's Service staff, per the office of Head Start (accommodation requests will be handled according to federal law).
  • Qualifications and education vary.
