Job Overview

  • AHC and APAH seek an affordable housing policy intern for Summer 2023.
  • Applicants must be a current undergraduate or graduate student with a demonstrated interest in affordable housing advocacy.
  • The internship runs eight to ten weeks, split evenly between APAH and AHC.
  • Typical workdays are Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
  • Primarily in person, with up to one day per week of remote work.

Compensation

  • Salary: $20 per hour
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination required. Intern must receive two shots of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines or one shot of the Janssen vaccine prior to the first day of internship.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting research, developing materials, and writing reports concerning affordable housing sources of funding across DMV districts.
  • Developing a housing policy and agency tracker.
  • Researching energy-efficient financing funding opportunities and compliance in the New Inflation Reduction Act.
  • Developing an advocacy toolkit with Resident Services team to increase resident involvement in public advocacy.
  • Creating a flow chart to summarize the real estate development process.
  • Researching and providing written reports on selected and approved topics related to resident rent burden, bridging renting to homeownership, transit challenges and opportunities, how rising insurance costs affect affordable housing, and community engagement strategies.
  • Applying strategic, analytical, and creative thinking to help promote policy issues and social mission programming.
  • Building awareness of advocacy work through the coordination of activities and project management.
  • Participating in various real estate development team meetings to gain insight on the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program or other affordable housing tools.
  • Assisting with a resident service program of your choice.

Requirements

  • Studying Urban Planning, Public Policy, Social Work, or other related fields.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with an emphasis on Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • A conscientious, curious, and well-organized self-starter.
  • Able to work in a dynamic, fast-paced setting with flexibility and creativity.
  • Appreciative of the mission of affordable housing.
