The Internship

In a supply chain internship, you’ll observe the inner workings of a plant that produces and delivers a product. You’ll see how professionals interact with the production team, warehouse supervisors, upper management, and customers. During your supply chain internship, you’ll also learn to use software systems such as radio-frequency identification (RFID) and databases for procurement, inventory management, planning, and tracking the movement of products. The project management, technical, problem-solving, and communication skills you learn may help launch your career.

To work in a supply chain internship position, you’ll need pursue a bachelor’s degree in business, systems engineering, or supply chain management. Certifications such as APICS and SOLE will help advance your career. 

The Career Options

You could work in the logistics department of a company or the military, or work for a company that specializes in logistics, spending time in the office as well as in manufacturing plants and distribution centers. You’ll be responsible for directing the movement of goods, people, and supplies to keep operations on schedule and meet client demands. Often seen as critical to a company’s operations and finances, supply chain managers are often richly rewarded and eventually fill C-level positions. 

The Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the supply chain field is projected to grow 2% over the next decade, which is below average.
