Role
Washingtonian is an award-winning, 60-year-old regional magazine working across platforms to cover news, culture, personalities, and life in the Washington, DC, area. We are looking for an organized, resourceful, and versatile journalist to work as a full-time assistant research editor at the magazine. This is a good first or second job for an aspiring journalist.
Key Accountabilities
- Helping to screen, hire, and oversee our editorial fellows; we hire approximately four fellows, three times a year, for sessions that last three to four months.
- Ability to fact-check articles carefully and thoroughly.
- Ability to report and write quick-hit online news posts as well as short feature items in the print magazine.
- Having knowledge and/or passion about the DC region to pitch lots of story ideas.
- Helping to oversee and tabulate surveys for articles such as Top Financial Advisers and Top Lawyers.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
- Be able to work quickly and carefully on deadline.
- Have experience meeting deadlines.
- Have experience with fact-checking and research.
- Have experience managing other people, such as on a college newspaper.
- Be organized and able to multi-task.
- Be relentlessly curious about goings-on in Washington, DC.
- Have experience reporting news.
- Have a lively writing style with voice.
- Be well-versed in creating and managing spreadsheets.
- Have experience with surveys and/or statistics.
Compensation and Location
Salary range: $45,000-$50,000. The job is located in downtown Washington, DC; a hybrid schedule with in-office time is preferred. Preferred that applicants live in DC/Maryland/Virginia or be willing to relocate.
