Backend Engineer Backend Intern

Axiom (YC W25) · Austin, TX

  • Full-time

About the role

We're building the trading platform for any asset, anywhere. Today, we process $100M+ in daily volume, serve 40k+ daily users, and operate at a 9-figure run-rate. The product is live, growing fast, and moving real money. We're looking for an exceptional engineer who wants to build at the center of it.

Why join

You'll join a small team building a product already moving serious volume, with direct ownership from day one. If you want a comfortable corporate job, this probably isn't it. If you want to build, ship, own, and get rewarded for being exceptional, we should talk.

What you'll work on

You'll work directly with the founders across core product and infrastructure:

  • Trading UX
  • Real-time systems
  • Performance and reliability
  • Crypto rails
  • Internal tools
  • New product surfaces

This is a high-ownership role. You'll take ambiguous problems, make good decisions, and ship fast.

Who we want

We care less about where you worked and more about what you can build. You're a strong fit if you:

  • Write fast, reliable, high-quality code
  • Own projects end-to-end without heavy management
  • Move quickly without creating chaos
  • Communicate clearly
  • Care about product, users, and business outcomes
  • Want to work closely with founders
  • Thrive in an intense, high-speed startup environment

Stack

TypeScript, Rust, Next.js, Jotai, TailwindCSS, PostgreSQL, uWebSockets

How we work

We work hard because the opportunity is massive and the team is small. But we don't do fake urgency, meeting bloat, or hours-as-a-KPI. We care about ownership, judgment, execution, and visible progress. You'll get:

  • High autonomy
  • Low bureaucracy
  • Direct founder access
  • Fast decisions
  • Clear expectations
  • Trust over micromanagement

Compensation & benefits

We pay aggressively for exceptional people. Compensation can include:

  • Highly competitive base salary
  • Meaningful equity
  • Performance-based upside
  • Relocation support
  • Meals / DoorDash support
  • High-end equipment
  • Flexible PTO

No rigid PTO policy. Take time off when you need it, communicate clearly, and own your commitments.

Interview Process

  • Apply on LinkedIn
  • Hackerrank Technical Interview
  • Work trial
  • Offer

Expect to discuss:

  • React
  • JavaScript / TypeScript
  • CSS
  • Browser rendering
  • Performance
  • Component architecture
  • Product and UI tradeoffs

We care far more about understanding than memorization. Be ready to explain why things work, not just how to use them.
