Essential Job Duties
The Translational Research in Pain (TRiP) Program is a clinical and basic research program that works to improve pain control in veterinary species and humans, through comparative research. The selected candidate will work under the direct guidance of Dr. Duncan Lascelles, a translational pain researcher, veterinarian and Specialist in Small Animal Surgery. The selected candidate will work with team members including 2-3 graduate students, 2 Veterinarian Research Assistants, 2 Research Specialist Technicians, undergraduate students. Close on-site faculty collaborators include Drs. Santosh Mishra, Margaret Gruen and Mike Nolan. The selected candidate will also work closely with the Clinical Studies Core (CSC) and/or Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR). The CSC and LAR facilitate veterinary studies and provide organizational and technical support, serving as a liaison between investigators, referring veterinarians and sponsors to promote studies and ensure success.
This internship provides a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to learn about clinical research through hands‑on experience with a team of highly specialized clinical faculty and researchers. Day‑to‑day training will be given by the TRiP and CSC technicians, Dr. Lascelles and Dr. Enomoto and will include methods of patient recruitment, general and specialized examinations, specialized diagnostic procedures, sample collection and processing, tracking samples, data entry and verification, use of electronic data capture, basic statistical analysis, writing project reports, communicating with sponsors, presenting project updates, manuscript preparation. Training will be dependent on the clinical studies being run and will also include didactic lectures on performing clinical research and specific training in Good Clinical Practice. Attendance at all NCSU Intern Seminars and Rounds is mandatory.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assistance with study publicity and recruitment.
- Review of patient records to determine study eligibility.
- Performing physical examinations.
- Performing specialized examinations (orthopedic, neurological, ophthalmological).
- Coordinating and collecting samples on patients as required by study protocol.
- Evaluation of any owner‑compiled logs for accuracy and completeness.
- Providing clients and referring veterinarians with follow‑up regarding results of patient visits.
- Communicating regularly with principal investigators on study status.
- Providing necessary data to principal investigators at required time points based on study protocol.
- Participating in clinically relevant studies using research animals, including daily animal care, assisting with surgery, post‑surgery patient care, examinations, data/sample collection, and data organization.
- Ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice guidelines.
Other Work/Responsibilities
Time will be allotted to rotations in relevant areas (pertaining to ongoing studies, e.g., surgery, neurology, oncology) and mentoring by senior clinicians who are leaders in clinical research.

Work Schedule
Monday – Friday 8:00 am–5:00 pm, with some weekends and holidays.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Individuals demonstrating enthusiasm for and interest in clinical research (previous work or experience in clinical research; publications) and / or pain conditions.
Required License or Certification
Eligibility for North Carolina Veterinary License and/or faculty certificate under the supervision of the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine.
Anticipated Hiring Range
$45,000.
