Support community engagement, economic development, and philanthropic initiatives across Wisconsin by working alongside Community Relations, Media Relations, Key Accounts, Mid Market, Ag Services and Foundation teams. This role assists with coordinating community events, supporting nonprofit partnerships, conducting research on local initiatives, and helping advance programs that strengthen relationships with local governments, businesses, and community organizations. Interns gain hands-on experience in stakeholder engagement, workforce development, and social investment efforts that help communities thrive.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Coordinate community engagement activities by supporting local events, partnerships, and outreach with nonprofits, chambers, and community organizations.
- Assist with foundation and volunteer programs, including tracking employee volunteerism and supporting grant and giving initiatives.
- Conduct research and prepare briefings on community needs, economic development opportunities, and key stakeholder priorities.
- Support communications efforts by drafting materials, assisting with media/event logistics, and helping ensure clear, consistent messaging.
- Help manage stakeholder relationships by coordinating meetings, maintaining contact lists, and supporting engagement with local leaders and partners.
This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.
Minimum Requirements:
- Current student, Sophomore or higher
- Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Business, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Political Science
- Local travel
- Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, nonprofit management, political science, or a related field
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to organize and manage multiple projects or events with attention to detail
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
- Interest in community engagement, philanthropy, or economic development
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a professional environment
