The Work You Will Do:

DOT Internship – D5 - Fall 2026 Semester / August to December

The Construction Support office is where engineers are committed to providing practical assistance and direction within each discipline. We seek to accomplish this by fostering relations with our partners and improving policy and procedures related to construction contracts.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

As an intern in this office, you will be exposed to both Construction and Maintenance disciplines.

  • The intern shall assist in the review of driveway, drainage, and utility permits.
  • Review Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Plans.
  • Assess proposed driveway connections in accordance with Florida Administrative Code and FDOT standards and criteria.
  • Review and assess proposed drainage connections in accordance with applicable Florida.
  • Learn how to process permits and perform field reviews with permit coordinators.
  • Generate monthly permit reports in Microsoft Access database.
  • Assist with review monthly estimates for construction projects.
  • You will learn and assist construction project manager on different construction related projects.

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Basic engineering principles and concepts.

Skills in:

  • Use of a personal computer (PC) and Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Organization, time management, and task prioritization.

Ability to:

  • Understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and provide identification supporting citizenship or authority to work for the duration of program participation.
  • Participants are required to comply with all statutes and rules and the Department's policies, procedures, regulations, and Code of Ethics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • We are looking for a highly motivated team member that is a college level student who desires to work on a dynamic team and with other departments within FDOT District 5.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: You will be required to provide your Social Security Number to conduct required verifications. Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, will not be eligible for hire or promotion in the Career Service, or appointment in the Selected Exempt Service (SES) or Senior Management Service (SMS), unless they are registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS.
