Role

NC State University Libraries is seeking a graduate assistant to support work in the Special Collections Research Center's (SCRC) Teaching and Outreach program at the D. H. Hill Jr. Library. This position provides hands-on experience with teaching and outreach using special collections materials, including archival materials and rare books. Additionally, the graduate assistant will be integrated into a team of library professionals to provide direct support to students and faculty across disciplines.

Essential Job Duties

Under the supervision of the Teaching and Faculty Engagement Librarian, the student will:

• Manage planning logistics for teaching and outreach activities, including instruction sessions and outreach events.
• Prepare archival materials and supplies for instruction and outreach activities.
• Support SCRC librarians with archival research, item selection, and lesson plan design.
• Develop supporting materials such as research tutorials and materials lists.

The graduate assistant may also have the opportunity to:

• Support research consultations and reference requests with students
• Support outreach activities, including tabling events, pop-up exhibits, and workshops

Work Schedule

Variable depending on the needs of the instruction and outreach team. Some possible evening and weekend hours may be required, with advance planning and discussion with the supervisor. This position is up to 20 hours per week.

Physical Requirements

Occasional lifting and carrying boxes and oversize materials weighing up to 30 pounds.

Requirements and Preferences

• Must be enrolled in a graduate program
• Special collections literacy (required)
• Experience with teaching and outreach (preferred)
• Familiarity with archives and special collections resources (preferred)
• Ability to work independently (preferred)
