Purpose of Announcement

Examination is announced to establish an employment list to fill one (1) current east Jefferson vacancy in the department of inspection and code enforcement and future vacancies as they occur.

Kind of Work

Under the general direction of the department director, performs highly‑responsible work in assisting the director in exercising direct administrative supervision and coordination of all staff and activities relating to the mission and responsibilities of the department of inspection and code enforcement. This position is responsible for assisting the director in overall operation of the department relative to inspection, regulatory, and code enforcement activities and responsibilities over the improvement and maintenance of neighborhood quality of life throughout Jefferson Parish. Assists the director in the direct administrative supervision over all requests and complaints received by the parish council, parish president, and/or any administrative department. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing and managing the day‑to‑day operations of the department through subordinate supervisory personnel. Employees in this classification will directly supervise the regulatory manager, executive superintendent, and property maintenance/zoning enforcement manager. Performs related work as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications for Admission to Examination

  • Current employment and permanent civil service status with Jefferson Parish in plan review, building trades, or property/maintenance inspection sections of the department of inspection and code enforcement at the III level or above.
  • Extensive experience in regulatory code enforcement work at a supervisory level in the department of inspection and code enforcement.
  • Possession of ICC (International Code Council) building official certification.
  • Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Minimum Qualification Requirement

  • Certification from AAFM (American Association of Floodplain Managers).
  • Valid driver's license issued by a state other than Louisiana is acceptable for application; however, once an employment offer is extended, an applicant has ten (10) days to obtain the required Louisiana license. Failure to obtain a Louisiana license will disqualify an applicant for permanent employment in this position.

Additional Eligibility

Current parish employees not currently employed in the department in which the vacancy exists who believe they qualify based on past employment and work experience in that department may be accepted based on the extent, quality and relevance of that past experience as it relates to the tasks described above.

Kind of Examination

(Promotional and limited entrance*) – Employees of equal or higher job classifications who otherwise meet the above qualification requirements may apply and qualify but will be placed on an entrance eligibility list.

Examination Process

The examination may consist of a written exam, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing.

  • Vacation (Annual Leave): Employees accumulate one half day of paid vacation for every two weeks worked. Accrual rates increase with years of service. Unused annual leave is usually paid upon separation from parish employment.
