Overview Join our team as a Library Intern, where you will have an opportunity show off your excellent customer service skills while engaging with the diverse community of Inkster, Michigan. As a Library Intern, you will assist patrons with technological needs, perform circulation tasks, assist with library events, and collection maintenance. Your enthusiasm and commitment to growth will help foster a welcoming space for learning and exploration.

Students currently enrolled in an ALA accredited MLIS or MLIS program (or recent graduate) is preferred. Others who are interested in working in a library are encouraged to apply!

Responsibilities Perform circulation-related tasks. Assist with cataloging library materials using the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system and integrated library system software. Organize and maintain library collections through alphabetical and numerical filing, ensuring easy access to resources.

Data entry tasks related to records management and database searching for reference services. Provide friendly customer service by helping visitors with technology inquiries, locating materials, and answering questions. Troubleshoot basic software issues related to productivity software, database systems, or cataloging tools to maintain seamless operations.

Assist with library programs.

Requirements Strong communication skills to assist patrons effectively and collaborate with team members. Technical proficiency in using integrated library systems (ILS), online resource databases, and basic software troubleshooting is preferred but not mandatory; training will be provided. Strong organizational skills with experience in filing systems such as alphabetical and numerical filing methods.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google suites. Students currently enrolled in an ALA accredited MLIS or MLIS program (or recent graduate) is preferred. Others who are interested in working in a library are encouraged to apply!

Excellent writing skills for record keeping, reports, and communication with staff and visitors. Knowledge of library classification systems like Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is preferred but not mandatory; training will be provided. Ability to perform data entry accurately and efficiently while maintaining attention to detail.

Capable of strong project and time management. This role is perfect for motivated students currently enrolled in an ALA accredited program (or recent graduate), and excited to gain hands-on experience in library services.
