Job Summary

The CITGO Lemont Refinery is searching for an HSE intern - Process Safety Engineer intern, who will be become familiar with the refinery organization and work processes while learning refinery safe work practices. The intern may be assigned to assist in implementing and maintaining systems to reduce risk to diminish or remove hazards. The Process Safety Engineer Intern actively works with Business Unit engineers in their designated operating areas to implement, update, improve PSM systems and processes, standards, and procedures, and communicates critical PSM/RMP-related performance information to the HSSE Department. This position is a paid 12-week summer internship. A presentation covering all aspects of the internship experience and accomplishments will be expected at the end of the term. This position is located on-site at the CITGO Refinery in Lemont, Illinois.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a full-time student pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or Fire Protection and safety Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program.
  • Must be at least a sophomore status in college (completion of freshman year) with an overall GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Available to work forty hours (40) per week
  • Must have current valid driver's license
  • Candidate must possess strong analytical and communication skills and be able to work in a team environment
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Eligibility

Job Duties

  • Assist with facilitating various forms of hazard analysis including Hazard and Operability Studies (HazOp), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), what-if, and what-if checklist methods
  • Assist with the PHA Program and the life cycle for the PHA process
  • Development of interim risk reduction strategies for high-consequence scenarios
  • Participate in HSE meetings
  • Interact regularly and frequently with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering at assigned areas to build rapport and to be aware of, and assist with resolving, process safety issues
  • Develop and deliver training on process safety management and related topics. Advise on the interpretation and application of internal and external standards
  • Participate in incident investigations, review cause maps, and ensure post-incident lessons learned and incident prevention strategies are implemented
  • Provide technical support to the facility's process safety teams as well as associated process safety programs and their initiatives
  • Identify and establish leading indicator metrics that are tracked, trended, and used in a way to identify areas of concerns, improvement programs, address risk/ hazards and ultimately eliminate incidents
  • Develop expertise in administering the refinery Management of Change (MOC) program and working closely with site MOC Champion for continuous improvement
  • Perform training, lead team meetings, compose and deliver presentations to various groups at all levels of the organization.
